What Community Banks Should Prioritize in Their 2027 Marketing Plan

Q4 is when next year's marketing budget gets decided. Here's how community banks should be thinking about 2027 — and where the real opportunities are.

For most community banks, the 2027 marketing budget conversation is happening right now. Leadership is looking at this year's results, assessing what worked, and deciding where to put money next year. The decisions made in the next sixty days will shape the institution's marketing posture for all of 2027.

Here's where community banks should be prioritizing — and where the budget is most likely to be wasted.

Lead with commercial, not consumer

The highest-return marketing investment for most community banks is business banking, not consumer deposits. Commercial relationships drive more revenue per account, create deeper institutional ties, and generate referrals across the business owner's professional network. Consumer deposit marketing is necessary for core funding, but the ROI on commercial business development support is almost always higher.

If your 2027 marketing plan doesn't have a specific budget line for commercial business development — content, one-pagers, case studies, email sequences, LinkedIn presence for your loan officers — that's the first thing to add.

Invest in digital infrastructure before campaigns

Many community banks are running marketing campaigns on top of a weak digital foundation. An outdated website, an unmaintained Google Business Profile, inconsistent directory listings, and no structured review acquisition program all undermine the performance of everything else you spend on marketing.

Before increasing spend on paid media or campaign activity in 2027, audit the foundation. Is your website mobile-optimized and fast? Does it clearly explain your commercial and consumer offerings in language your customers use? Is your Google Business Profile current, with recent reviews and accurate hours and contact information across all branches? These aren't glamorous investments, but they're foundational to everything else performing.

Build a content program around your expertise

Community banks have genuine expertise that business owners in their markets need: SBA lending, commercial real estate financing, cash flow management, business checking and treasury services. Content built around that expertise — blog posts, email newsletters, guides, local market commentary — builds search visibility and positions your institution as the expert resource in your market.

This is a 2027 investment with a 2028 and 2029 payoff. Content compounds over time in ways that paid media doesn't. The banks that start this program now are building an asset. The ones that wait are spending more on acquisition every year to make up for the authority they haven't built.

Activate your referral network

CPAs, commercial real estate brokers, attorneys, and insurance agents all refer banking relationships. Most community banks manage these relationships informally. A structured referral program — with regular touchpoints, clear communication about what you're looking for, and tools that make referring easy — consistently outperforms passive reliance on goodwill.

Budget for this explicitly in 2027. The cost is low relative to the return, and it's a channel your competitors are almost certainly underinvesting in.

Plan for compliance from the start

Financial marketing operates under real regulatory constraints that shape what you can say, how you can say it, and where you can say it. Building compliance review into your marketing workflow from the start of 2027 — rather than retrofitting it after campaigns are already built — saves time, budget, and institutional risk. If you're working with an outside agency, make sure they understand financial advertising requirements before they start building.

What to cut

Broad brand awareness advertising that doesn't have a measurable local component, generic social content that isn't connected to your community or expertise, and vendor relationships that have been renewing on autopilot without clear performance accountability are the most common budget recovery opportunities for community banks heading into 2027.
